At Greensboro Elks Lodge #602, service to our community and our nation has always been at the heart of who we are. Our partnership with the Tunnel to Towers Foundation reflects those same values—honoring the sacrifice of our nation's first responders, military service members, and the families they leave behind.
The Tunnel to Towers Foundation was established in memory of FDNY Firefighter Stephen Siller, who gave his life on September 11, 2001. After learning of the attacks on the World Trade Center, Stephen ran through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel in full firefighting gear to reach the Twin Towers, where he made the ultimate sacrifice while saving others. His courage and selflessness inspired a foundation committed to ensuring that America's heroes are never forgotten.
Today, Tunnel to Towers provides mortgage-free homes to the families of fallen first responders and Gold Star families, builds specially adapted smart homes for catastrophically injured veterans and first responders, and works to end veteran homelessness through housing and support programs. Every initiative carries forward Stephen Siller's belief that service to others is one of life's highest callings.
For Greensboro Elks Lodge #602, supporting Tunnel to Towers is a natural extension of our mission. As Elks, we are committed to patriotism, charity, and service to our communities. Through our annual fundraising efforts, we proudly stand beside an organization that changes lives while ensuring the sacrifices of our nation's heroes are never forgotten.
Over the years, our Lodge has honored local first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice, while helping Tunnel to Towers provide hope and support to the families they left behind. Among those remembered through our fundraising efforts are Firefighter Rick Murrell, Firefighter Matt Hall, Sergeant Dale Nix, Officer Michael Horan, and this year's honoree, Greensboro Police Officer Lucas Matherly Pierce, who faithfully served our community for 17 years.
Now entering our sixth year of supporting Tunnel to Towers, Greensboro Elks Lodge #602 is proud to have raised more than $115,000 in support of the Foundation's mission. Each year, our members and community continue to demonstrate that when we come together for a worthy cause, we can make a lasting impact.
Every dollar raised, every event attended, and every conversation shared helps preserve the legacy of those who gave everything in service to others. Together, we can make a meaningful difference for the families who continue to carry that sacrifice every day.
